Mental Health Center | 'Green Cloud' ER courtyards

Typology Hospitals

Location Petah Tikva. Israel

Area 250 m2

Year 2025

Geha Mental Health Hospital is part of the Beilinson Campus in Petah Tikva and is integrated into a broader medical complex operating within an urban context.

The design of the emergency courtyards is based on the creation of a calm, airy, and containing environment, allowing moments of pause and reorientation within an intense sequence of movement, waiting, and uncertainty. The central motif of the courtyards is the “Green Cloud” — a continuous, elevated layer of vegetation that hovers above the space, forming a soft and inviting natural canopy.

Slender, tall trees establish a vertical rhythm and draw the gaze upward toward the dense green layer above, enabling a brief detachment from the ground plane and the immediate medical context. Light and shadow filtering through the foliage create gentle, slow-moving patterns that contribute to stress reduction and a sense of calm.

The ground level is designed as open, bright, and restrained, with minimal furniture and dispersed seating that allows for personal, non-prescriptive, and non-hierarchical use. The relationship between the subdued ground plane and the green cloud above produces a balanced, non-dramatic and soothing spatial experience that respects the need for quiet, privacy, and inward reflection.

Through the Green Cloud, the emergency courtyards function as therapeutic transitional spaces—places where patients and accompanying family members can lift their gaze, take a breath, and experience a moment of calm before continuing the triage and treatment process.
